In search of finding a solution and trying to simplify it I stumbled on this resource online. ‘Anger management-Calming strategy cards’ by Liz’s early learning spot.com and ‘Good choices VS Bad choices’ by Flying into learning
Lil Knight chose his top 5 calming cards
Calming down strategy cards
These cards worked well to understand the difference between good behavior and bad behavior. I printed and laminated them to keep them going longer.
We spoke about each card using
“What do you see?”
“What do you think?
“What do you feel?”
It helped Lil Knight understand why the behavior was bad or good. I drew and set aside the cards that were to advanced. If I felt his behavior needed to be corrected I added them on our daily behavior chart board . Placed this in front for everyone to see and keep track of.
If you are using them to correct behaviors stick to a maximum of three. This avoids getting overwhelmed and allows your child to be in some control. This worked positively for me in re-establishing and correcting behavior.
I followed these with ‘Calming down cards’ that helped Lil Knight to understand different calming down strategies that he could use. I found these help him understand his own emotions, understand that good choices get rewarded and bad choices don’t get anything.
Before Lil Knight started school we went through these cards and spoke about the few changes he would have in school as he had never gone to nursery and it would be a whole new environment and setting.
Now he is 5 and we keep revisiting these cards every now and then. It helps us to play, have fun and communicate effectively. Lil Knight reads now making it easier to reflect and understand each card. We still pick 5 behaviors to focus for a week.
Good choices vs Bad choices
I do hope these cards help you as much as it has helped me. After scanning so many resources online these cards had great pictorials and spoke about the important ones thus ticking all my boxes.
You can start the simple cards from 2 years onwards and slowly introduce different behaviors as they grow.
